Killdeer at the Air Show
Why is a somewhat blurry Killdeer in this post? I was at the Niagara Falls Air Show this past weekend and…
ended up parked at a small wetland where there were a few birds braving all the noise and commotion. The big birds, the USAF Thunderbirds commanded the sky. High in the sky too. I did get some shots as they blasted by a bit lower, but these planes are powerful and very noisy. The ground rumbled and the noise made me uneasy. I have no clue how the feathered birds flying around could stand it.
The Killdeer is blurry because he was too close for my lens. I just looked down and there he was.
On GWGT late in the week, I have the acrobat planes coming up. The post is called, Do You Specialize and it asks the question to photographers. I was asked the question, “What photography do I specialize in?”, when I was at the air show by a couple of photographers. What do you think I answered? On GWGT I tell you. Also on GWGT, I tell you about my weekend at the air show. I know nothing about planes and am not too fond of flying, but do love seeing our airmen perform.
I liked seeing the Killdeer too. They cracked me up. Nothing phased them.
And those gulls. My gosh they were dive bombing the spectators for the outrageously expensive food. The gulls were also doing aerial maneuvers that rivaled the planes performing. It was like they knew what they were doing. As the helicopter hovered, so did they. I could not get them both in the frame with a 400mm lens, but it was hilarious.

In my view, patriotism to our USA is really important so thank you for sharing this.
But I wonder, how does a person pilot a plane while upside down? The blood automatically rushes to our heads when inverted like that. I realize the machine is designed to fly that way, but not mankind. Gulls, yes, people, no. Makes me shudder!
Big birds, little birds–I loved them all. It’s amazing that they can share the sky.

Lovely shots, of both kind of birds! I recently watched an airshow here in town, those pilots are pretty talented guys! Impressive!
Gulls seem to brave just about anything for people food….I have been on the receiving end of a gull attack for food. Great shots.
Great pictures! You definitely have a future in photographing planes (though, generally speaking, I find birds more interesting than planes!).
