Hawk with a Mouse

Hawk-with-Mouse-1

Today was a bad day for photographing wildlife. Nothing could be found and what was found, was far away or very high in a tree.

My friend and I were just talking about a trip she was on and birds were absent, even songbirds. I have been noticing it similar around here as well. Ducks have disappeared on the Niagara River barring a few Mallards.

I went in search of the eagle I saw a few weeks ago, and that also was missing. Songbirds were not even in the trees at the parks, except for sparrows. It makes me wonder how much is due to our crazy weather. Today was sunny, but in the low 20’s. Yesterday was bitter cold at 12°F and windy. Before that it has been very warm and the end of this week, we are headed to higher temperatures.

Hawk-Flying

I did see three hawks, but most were too far away. Even the hawk with the mouse pictured was way beyond what I could reach with my 400mm.  It did not help that he was back-lighted either. I knew he had prey, but did not know what it was until I loaded the images. Pretty meager meal, unfortunately.

Great pics of the hawk Donna, it is always a bonus to get them with prey enclawed!

One of those days … been there done that. You made a pretty good show of it though.

  3. Hmmm, a blond hawk, always nice. Great pictures. Due to the strange temperatures we have here there are not as many birds around as normaly in wintertime.

  4. This weather has been crazy! None of us are used to the cold temperatures.

I like the hawk. In winter I don’t get to see them.

  6. Great shots even with the conditions….here we see mostly woodpeckers and juncos. Some of the smaller sparrows, chickadees, cardinals at times too. And an occasional hawk but also too far away for my lens to get a good shot…..lots of geese moving again and some still on the lake.

  7. You might have had a bad day, but the mouse’s day was really bad.
